Liberica Coffee

Liberica is also called the forgotten type of coffee, which is grown only in a few countries – Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The Liberica coffee was first discovered in Liberia, West Africa, and from there, it took its name. Gradually, the coffee plant was brought to other countries. As of now, the Philippines is the largest producer of Liberica coffee. About 70% of the Liberica coffee is produced in the Philippines.

Liberica coffee was once a popular drink in South Asia. However, the story behind its popularity is not clear. However, it is said that somewhere around 1890, the Arabica plant became infected, and farmers quickly shifted to another coffee variant, Robusta and Liberica, as they were more resistant to diseases and pests. Moreover, the Liberica coffee plant is easy to grow as compared to the Arabica plant. The close proximity of Indonesia and Malaysia helped in the quick spread of the Liberica coffee beans.

Liberica Coffee Plant Characteristics

The Liberica plant grows to a height of about 17 meters. And the tree takes five years to start bearing cherries. The ripened cherries turn yellow and pink in color. But because of the tall height of the tree, picking the cherries is not an easy job. The leaves and cherries of the tree are larger than those of Arabica and Robusta. The size of coffee cherries on Liberica Coffee Plant is almost double the size of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans. The leaves of the Liberica Coffee Plant can grow 30 meters wide.
