Robusta Coffee

The story of coffee is very long as it travelled from Ethiopia to Yemen and then from Europe to England. As it travelled, it added new stories with it. But what is true today is that coffee is a powerful beverage to keep you energized. The demand for coffee in the global market is much higher. Many countries are already producing coffee and its variants. Robusta is a variant of coffee beans that is complex to taste but has a high market demand.

Some called Robusta the smart brother of Arabica coffee beans. If Arabica coffee beans dominate the coffee market with 60%, Robusta shares the rest of the 40% of the market. Robusta is the next most popular coffee bean in the market. Robusta coffee beans are often used in brewing espresso as they help make a creamy texture. The Robusta shrubs catch fewer diseases and harvest better than Arabica.

Caffeine Content of Robusta

Robusta contains a lot of caffeine and antioxidant properties (chlorogenic acids) that help the shrub prevent itself from pests and insects. The chlorogenic acids also play a crucial role in creating the flavor of the coffee. A low level of chlorogenic acids is believed to create a good-tasting coffee. But as the chlorogenic acids are more in Robusta, the coffee beans give a mixed taste that is not always delicious. The caffeine content in Robusta is two times more than that of Arabica. A Robusta coffee bean contains about 2.2-2.7% caffeine. As the market demand for Arabica and Robusta is divided at a ratio of 60:40, the people who drink Arabica often splurge on Robusta.

Robusta Taste Like

Robusta coffee beans are not as sweet as Arabica. A coffee made with Robusta will taste stronger and bitter. The bitter taste of the coffee beans works as a self-defense mechanism for the plant to protect itself from pests. Arabica coffee beans have a sweet taste and are more prone to pests and diseases. The taste of Robusta is bitter, but it can be improved by adding a small portion of milk and sugar to it.

Robusta Coffee Plant Characteristic

Robusta coffee beans are harvested from the Robusta plant, first found in Sub-Saharan African regions. Today, the plant is found in many countries of Central America, South America, and Asia. Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of Robusta coffee beans, and Brazil is the second top producer of Robusta. The plant is easy to cultivate and care for. It grows to a height of five – 10 meters, depending on the location. When planted in the wild, the plant can grow to a height of 10 meters, but on commercial land, it may grow to 5 meters. The plant grows jasmine-like white flowers. And its cherries turn red when it is ripe. Each cherry on the Robusta plant carries two coffee beans.
